Recommended barley varieties

  • Since inception of AICRP on barley, about 94 barley varieties for malt, food, feed and dual purpose have been developed and released either through CVRC or SVRC for different zones viz., NWPZ, NEPZ, CZ and Hill zone for different eco systems like irrigated and rainfed conditions in India.Out of 94 varieties, 48 varieties have been released from CVRC and 46 have been released by SVRC.

  • 25th Nov. to 0Ist Dec was recommended for late sowing in Northern hills zone
  • 05th Nov. to 15th Nov was recommended for normal sowing in North western plains zone
  • 10th Dec. to 16th Dec was recommended for late sowing in North western plains zone
  • 15th Nov. to 25th Nov was recommended for normal sowing in North eastern plains zone

  • Seed rate of 100 kg/ha for irrigated timely sown conditions in medium fertile soil.
  • Seed rate of 120 kg/ha for irrigated or rainfed late sown conditions in poor soils.
  • The seed of barley should be sown to a depth of 5-7 cm at a spacing of 22-23 cm.
  • In case of two-row malt barley varieties, line to line spacing should be 18cm
  • Recommended dose of N:P:K for Northern Hill Zone under rainfed condition is 40:20:20 kg/ha respectively

  • 5 t FYM + 75 % of chemical fertilizer can be used in barley for sustainability, productivity and profitability.
  • The time of cut green fodder was optimized and cutting at 55 days after sowing was found optimum in plains and 70 days or first node stage in hills.
  • Seed rate of 120 kg/ha is optimum for dual purpose barley.
  • Optimum date of sowing for timely sown irrigated condition barley in NWPZ is 6-15 November in NEPZ is 20-30 November and in NHZs 10-24 November.
  • Sprinkler irrigation initially 20DAS and thereafter 25 days interval is best for attaining maximum grain yield of malt barley and sprinkler irrigation initially 20 DAS and hereafter 30 days interval is best attaining maximum grain yield of feed barley.
  • Optimum dose of sulphur application in barley is 20 kg/ha in NWPZ.
  • Optimum dose of P and K application in NHZ is 40 kg/ha.
  • Intercropping of one line of gram or raya in six rows of barley is recommended for higher returns per unit area.
  • Mulching of barley with 6 ton / ha and two irrigations are recommended for higher productivity of barley in North eastern plains zone.
  • Application of Pinoxaden @ 40 g/ha for effective control of Phlaris minor and Polypogonmonspeliensisin barley in NWPZ
  • The optimum dose of nitrogen under rainfed conditions in NHZ is recommended as 60 kg N per hectare and it should be applied as  2/3as basal and remaining 1/3 after first rain/snowfall to get the maximum grain yield
  • Application of Pinoxaden @ 40 g/ha + carfentrazone @ 20 g/ha OR Pinoxaden @ 40 g/ha followed by metsulfuron @ 4 g/ha for effective control of complex weed flora in barley in NWPZ
  • Application of Pinoxaden @ 40 g/ha + metsulfuron @ 4 g/ha for effective control complex weed flora in barley in NHZ
  • Residue retention @ 6 ton per ha is recommended to enhance productivity and quality of feed and malt barley under rice barley cropping system
  • Broadcasting of overnight soaked and shade dried barley seed @ 150kg per ha for relay cropping of feed and malt barley in cotton and sown during 12th November – 02 December is recommended under cotton barley cropping system to  enhance the quality and productivity of barley
